Lockport Fire Department FAQ

When should I call the Fire Department?
You should call for the Fire Department whenever you feel that there is an actual or impending fire or other related emergency. It is always better to be safe than sorry. Remember, dial 911.

When should I call for an ambulance?
If you have a medical emergency you should always call for an ambulance. Medical emergencies include, but are not limited to problems involving the following: Breathing; Bleeding; Head, neck or spinal cord injury; Chest pains; Broken bones when the injured cannot be moved; Trauma (motor vehicle accidents, assaults). Remember, dial 911.

What can I do to help the Firefighters or Paramedics find my house or location more easily in an emergency at night?
When you call 911 give an accurate and detailed location of the problem. You can use landmarks (across from the park), identify a certain vehicle in the driveway (a boat for instance), or give a cross street reference (third house from the corner). You can make sure that your house or residence has a large, visible address number posted on the front of the house near the front entrance, and make sure your porch light is on. You can also have someone meet the firefighters or paramedics near the street to direct them to the location.

How do I become a Firefighter?
LFD is under the jurisdiction of NYS Civil Service Law. An open competitive written examination is given approximately every four years. There are educational and age requirements for taking the exam and for appointment eligibility. Check with the Lockport Civil Service Commission for additional details at: 716.439.6659.

How do I become a Paramedic or EMT?
If you want to be appointed to the LFD you must be at least certified to the NYS Department of Health EMT-Paramedic Level. In Niagara County, the primary EMS course sponsors offering EMT certification courses are Niagara County Community College and Niagara University. There are sponsors in adjacent counties as well. Niagara County Community College offers all levels of certification up to and including Paramedic.

Who can I talk to regarding a Fire Code violation or Fire Safety Inspection?
You can call the Fire Chief's Office at 716.439.6611 or the Building Inspection Department at 716.439.6753.

How can I get a Fire Record or Fire Report?
You can call 716.439.6611 or visit the Fire Chief's Office in the Municipal Building, One Locks Plaza, Lockport, New York.

How can I get information regarding an ambulance bill or obtain an Ambulance Run Report?
You can call 716.439.6610 or visit the LFD Ambulance Billing Office in the Municipal Building, One Locks Plaza, Lockport, New York.

How can I get a Firefighter or a Paramedic/EMT to speak at my group about fire or emergency medical issues?
You can call the LFD Training Office at 716.439.6662. You can also make arrangements for a group tour of Fire Headquarters followed by a Fire Safety Education talk.

What do I do about a running, leaking, or damaged fire hydrant?
Fire hydrants are for fire fighting, not for having fun or supplying water for some other use. When a hydrant is opened illegally, thousands of gallons of water are wasted each minute. Children can risk serious injury from the powerful flow. There is also a loss of water pressure, which means that if there is a fire, someone might be injured or killed. If there is an opened hydrant, a leaky hydrant, report it immediately to the Lockport Fire Department Communications Room at 716.439.6724.
