There
are 40 sworn officers assigned to the Patrol Division; three
captains, six lieutenants and 31 patrol officers. The city
is divided into four patrol sections. One officer is assigned
into each section.
A K-9 Unit patrols city-wide as does the captain and one night
detective.
Patrol
cars are equipped with video cameras, computers, digital cameras,
encoded radios and AR-15 Rifles.
Among
a Patrol Officer’s responsibilities are:
- Responsibility
for the diligent and conscientious performance of the duties
imposed upon them by law, by the General Orders of the department,
and the lawful orders of their superior officers.
- Carefully
observe conditions which could lead to the development of
crime or criminal opportunities, take such preventive action
as the conditions may indicate, and report their observations,
actions, or recommendations, to their supervising officer.
- Investigate
all criminal matters that come before the department that
are assigned to him, and prepare reports as required.
- Ensure
constitutional guarantees given to all citizens are recognized
and protected. These guarantees, such as the right to counsel,
search and seizure, and the Miranda warning must be complied
with during criminal investigations.
The
in-vehicle computer software used by patrol division is the
most advanced available. All calls are dispatched through computer
dispatch. It allows officers to enter reports from the vehicle
and send the computer information to the station via radio transmissions.
It also gives officers instant access to photos of individuals
who may be wanted or are missing. The officers can communicate
car to car or car to station with e-mail transmissions. DMV
information is also available at the officer’s fingertips.
